EU Seminar on Peace Programme

DG Regional Policy and the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) have organised a workshop to be held at this year's Open Days. The Workshop entitled EU Programmes for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Island and Ireland - lessons learnt and shared, takes place on October 10th in Brussels and will discuss the impact of the European Union's PEACE programmes, the role of the International Fund for Ireland in promoting peace, reconciliation and mediation, and experiences from the Western Balkans and the accession negotiations with Cyprus.

The European Union's Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (PEACE II) is a unique EU funding programme which has addressed many of the issues that have emerged form the conflict in Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland.

The PEACE II Programme aims to 'reinforce progress towards a peaceful and stable society and promote reconciliation'. The Programme has funded 7,000 projects supported by EUR 994 million, which aim to help sectors, areas or groups, which have been hindered in their economic and social development by conflict. The programme in Northern Ireland and Ireland has developed a range of skills in mediation, conflict resolution and tackling community deprivation and isolation, and benefits from contact with projects in other countries.
